If you currently take a statin drug such as Lipitor, Zocor, Levacor, Crestor, or another statin your doctor should have recommended that you take at least 100mgs of coenzyme Q10 along with it. Unfortunately it has been my experience that many doctors do not make this recommendation to there patients. If your doctor has made this recommendation to you consider yourself fortunate to have a great doctor. If your doctor has not then you may question his decision making.
All statin drugs work on the principle of blocking your own livers production of cholesterol. Statins have little effect on the cholesterol that we consume through food. That is why there are many people that can eat very low cholesterol in there diet and still have high serum cholesterol readings. Because there own liver just keeps pumping out more cholesterol.
When the statin drug works as it should, blocking the livers production of cholesterol, it also blocks your livers production of coenzyme Q10. The side effects of statins are often muscle aches and muscle weakness. This is because coenzyme Q10 blood levels are directly related to cellular and muscular energy in the body. And the most important muscle in the body is the heart. Low Q10 levels have been present in a large percent of heart attack patients. It is ironic that in trying to prevent heart attacks by lowering cholesterol with statin drugs we are lowering our coenzyme to the point of putting ourselves at even more risk of heart attacks. Coenzyme Q10 is essential for cardiovascular health.
